300 guests were in attendance to celebrate a truly amazing year for British Cycling.

The night’s presenter, Matt Barbet, welcomed Sir Bradley Wiggins to the stage to announce the Local Hero Award in association with Freewheel. The award winner, Peter Harrison, has shown a lifelong commitment to the sport, sitting on regional and national boards, growing his own club and working as a technical consultant with the British team.

Harrison was greeted with rapturous applause when he told the 300-strong audience, “My mantra has always been put more back into your sport than you take out. That’s something I will continue to do as long as my body holds out.”

Brian Robinson, Britain’s first ever Tour de France stage winner, was presented with Cycling Weekly’s first ever Lifetime Achievement Award in association with BikeZaar.

Robinson’s accolade reflected not only his pioneering success on the road, but also his role in bringing the Tour de France to Yorkshire in 2014, as well as his continued presidency of the Dave Rayner Fund, which supports young Brits riding abroad.

Earlier in the night, Cycling Weekly editor Simon Richardson and Olympic legend Sir Chris Hoy opened proceedings, celebrating a year of momentous success for British cycling.

These achievements were reflected in the subsequent awards, with Geraint Thomas claiming Best Male Rider in association with Nederburg Wine, and track star Katie Archibald winning Best Female Rider in association with British Cycling.

Michael Broadwith, a maths teacher from Hertfordshire, won the Outstanding Achievement Award in association with Specialized for his incredible effort in smashing the so-called “unbreakable” Land’s End to John o’Groats record that had stood for 17 years.
