Vayeilech (Shabbat- Sat. 15th September /6th Tishrei)
Are You On The Move?
Notes:
• While last week’s Parsha , Nitzavim, translates as stability through ‘standing firm’, this week’s Parsha’s name is its polar opposite - to be on the move – Vayeilech. The truth is that to be on the move in a graceful and efficient manner means there must be stability underfoot. So the two aren’t really antithetical at all.
• Think about it: ultimate stillness does no exist. Everything is in a state of motion. You will find that even the chair you may be seated on is not perfectly still. It a vibrating collection of atoms and molecules in a constant state of motion to provide the tensile strength within the timber or metal to support you. Nothing in existence is perfectly still. Everything is in a state of motion. And that is the natural state of the world.
• We learn this in the Torah from the metaphor that G-d breathed the breath of life into the Cosmos – primordial Man. The ‘breath of life’ means the energy source that infuses all the elemental particles of existence and their finite energy levels. In other words, the world is like a balloon being constantly shaped by the Divine ‘Blower’. And this explains why everything possesses energy and movement.
• Likewise us. To be sedentary is unhealthy, because it offends the principle of primordial movement. Therefore in our laziness-induced machine-age, we are exhorted to exercise. Likewise a lazy mind quickly dements. Vayeilech means to make sure we are on the move, constantly advancing, progressing, growing and evolving.
• Introspect into your own life. Are you really on the move? Are you growing? Think about this on Yom Kippur!
