India lost more than 70,000 people because of climate change related disasters

A new report by an international think tank Germanwatch has some bad news for India. It says that between 1998 and 2017, India lost, on an average, 3,660 people every year because of extreme weather events. In this period 73,212 casualties were reported from India. which is the second highest for any country after Myanmar. In 2017 India accounted for the 2nd highest causalities after Myanmar 2,736 people died from events like floods, excessive rains and cyclones. Between 1998-2017, India lost $67.2 billion because of climate change-related events. During the same time, the global losses from climate change were pegged at $3.47 trillion. The five most vulnerable countries according to this index are Puerto Rico, Sri Lanka, Dominica, Nepal and Peru. India has been ranked at 14th position in the Global Climate Rank Index. Global Climate Risk Index is published every year by Germanwatch.
