Do I hold the key to life? Are you reading this wondering how I could make such a bold statement? The answer is yes I hold the key to life and so do you. The key to life is death, more specifically your mortality. As much as we don't want to think about it it's something we're all going to do. Maybe science will find a way to conquer it, but I wouldn't get your hopes up. I know what you're thinking. He's saying Live like there's no tomorrow. Live every day as if it is your last. No, I'm not really saying that because I don't believe those statements and I'm not going to waste my time and energy trying to get myself to believe it. Chances are you don't believe it either and you're not living your life that way. Because if you did, you probably wouldn't go to work if you lived today like it was the last day of your life. You probably wouldn't pay any bills, you wouldn't exercise, and you would eat whatever the hell you wanted (if you had an appetite) and it wouldn't be a happy day. I don't want to live every day of my life like that and neither do you. Come to think of it, a lot of people live like that and they're not happy. The key to life is total acceptance that you're going to die. You are mortal and you have a limited amount of time on earth. Does that mean you need to accomplish many things? Does that mean you should never worry, never stress, and do nothing? I don't think so. To me it means get out there and try things, travel, set outrageous goals, do things that fear would otherwise keep you from doing. To me it means enjoy the process and don't think you're self-worth has anything to do with what you own or your status because your worth is temporary. In other words, who would you be and what would you be doing if you weren't held back by fear? What it doesn't mean is wait. So many of us are waiting. We're waiting for the right time, waiting to make enough money, waiting to get married and start a family, waiting until the kids are grown up, waiting for retirement. Stop! When you fully accept your mortality there's no waiting, there's only doing.
