There are stories emerging that the UK could join the North America Free Trade Agreement should no deal be forthcoming from the EU.

The Telegraph says that ministers are considering if the UK could join the US, Canada and Mexico in NAFTA, should the UK and EU be unable to come to terms over Brexit.

So, what is NAFTA and how does it compare to the EU?

On population the EU is slightly larger than NAFTA with about 512 million citizens compared to 482 million in NAFTA.

But on GDP the roles are reversed. The EU has an annual GDP of just short of $21 trillion, but NAFTA has a GDP of about $22.5 trillion.

Now strip the UK’s 65 and a half million people and its $2.8 trillion GDP out of the EU and add it to NAFTA and you can see the attraction.

Britain, the US, Canada and Mexico combined account for more than 30 per cent of the entire global economy, says the Telegraph.

Also, there is no political convergence agenda with NAFTA and in place of freedom of movement rights there is what is called Treaty NAFTA or TN Status for specific professions.

This is maybe the model of what the EU should really have been all along, instead of trying to shoe-horn everyone into the same strait-jacket.

Maybe joining NAFTA will also go some way to repairing the bond that the US and UK enjoyed prior to the presidency of Barack Obama, whose advisers now say they saw the special relationship as bit of a joke.

The former presidential adviser to President Obama, Jeremy Shapiro, also revealed that he used to try and get references to the Malvinas, the Argentine name for the Falklands, into press conferences.

But I take the view that the UK must quickly re-learn the ability to look after itself. After all, it was the German born US diplomat, Henry Kissinger, who said ‘America has no permanent friends or enemies, only interests’. And remember that Charles de Gaulle also said ‘France has no friends, only interests’.

But the source of those sentiments may have come from our very own twice 19th century Prime Minister, Lord Palmerston, who said:

"We have no eternal allies, and we have no perpetual enemies. Our interests are eternal and perpetual”.

And finally, believe it or not, Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP has voted to stop the Royal Family’s funding.

The SNP party conference in Glasgow voted overwhelmingly to repeal the Sovereign Grant Act without a replacement, which would stop all funding for the Royals.

This vote of course has no impact at all because this is a matter that only Westminster can deal with.

But this is from the party that campaigned for independence as a nation but under the Monarchy, so you have to wonder how deep that loyalty goes, or was that just to give them a legitimacy to have their MPs sit in Westminster?

With the SNP political education convener, Julie Hepburn, claiming that the funding was “the equivalent of the Royal Family winning the lottery every single year” and was “a good rate of pay for charity work”, also shows a deep midunderstanding of how funding for the Royals is derived.
