"I am in blood, Stepped in so far that, Should I wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o'er" -Macbeth The year is 1454 in England, on the cusp of a Renaissance. The Hundred Years War and a series of plagues have taken its toll on the economy and the spirit of the nation. A weak puppet King in the form of Henry VI sits on the throne as the country is largely governed by a corrupt circle of "advisers" led by Henry's wife Queen Margaret of Anjou, which increasingly grows the resentment of the lower class. The political waters are disturbed by ripples made from Richard III, Duke of York, but whether this bears real change or more stagnation is yet to be seen... Meanwhile, the Cainite underworld grapples with its own transformation. A federation of vampires on the continent called the "Camarilla" has just recently formed, an antedeluvian has reportedly been destroyed and supposedly an entire clan is now being hunted. Most of these problems have not yet reached the shores of the British Isles, which is attempting to assert its own order. Prince Adam of London has been dead for a century, and in his wake an organization of the seven most powerful Princes in England have tenuously formed a group swearing non-aggression and cooperation -- the Covenant. A relatively remarkable achievement for these most treacherous and underhanded creatures, the Covenant has so far been a success which has seen only the occasional episodes of tension and fiery rhetoric between Princes. Enforcing their will upon the smaller towns and counties of England is a small band of cainites elected by the Covenant called the Gauntlet. Whether by diplomacy, infiltration, subterfuge, violence, or more mystical methods still, the Gauntlet roundly organized tribute from the weaker Princes and suppressed any would-be defiance against the Covenant for almost a century ... until they were one-and-all destroyed. The Gauntlet is gone, its every member turned to ash and confirmed to have met the Final Death. What this could mean, or foreshadow for the Covenant, is a grim thought -- and not one the seven Princes mean to dwell on. In the wake of the death of the Gauntlet, a new coterie is formed to fill their ranks and begin enforcing the will of the Covenant.
