This is the best preserved section of the wall which was started in 122CE and took six years to complete. Steel Rig is more or less in the centre of the wall and is about 5km from the fortifications at Housesteads. It survived because of its isolated position, particularly in the worst period of destruction for the wall which was in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries when the stones were used for road building and taken by farmers for constructing their own walls.
