Sanderstead were a couple of players down - Jallen was recovering from injury, Kash was "resting", Christie was at a wedding, and Shareef heroically played even though he had a hand injury. We brought in a couple of players to fill the gaps - Roger Wallbank came out (of the retirement home), and Giles Owen was called up from the 3rd XI. Giles is new to the club this season but he has already scored a 50 for the 4th XI and a ton for the 3rd XI. This was his debut for the 1st XI, and he was thrown right in at the deep end as he came in to bat with the side in all sorts of trouble at 105-5 on a flat pitch. What he did next was to help himself to an absolutely vital 50, with consummate ease - most impressively showing a bit of much needed calm and control as he went about his business, first in partnership with George Jackson (54) and then with skipper, Gregg Pettifor (37n.o.).
