The East African Portland Cement Company has laid off 520 staff members, as it struggles to keep its head above water.

Management says the board decided not to renew the contracts of the affected workers, because it already had a high wage bill and a bloated workforce. The Kenya Chemical and Allied Workers Union has however accused EAPCC nepotism and unprocedural termination has petitioned parliament to review the matter.
