||OPEN ME|| We were asked by some students to share our thoughts on the topic of how to give or request credit on work inspired by someone else. Read more: Our thoughts on "giving credit where credit is due", originally recorded as a Live Video in our Facebook group after the topic was brought up: (http://facebook.com/groups/loveleighloops) If you feel like you're being copied: - Take time to "cool down" - Give people the benefit of the doubt - Send a PRIVATE message to the offender - Politely ask that they credit you in their post If you're using another artist's original work as inspiration: - Link to their account, website, or original work in your caption - Use words like "inspired by X person" or "I saw X person create this and wanted to try it myself" At what point can you stop giving credit? - If you can't create the piece without referring to the original, chances are you're creating a replica. Give credit. - If you've learned the technique and put your own spin on it and no longer need to refer to the original, use your judgment but you probably don't need to credit Other tips: - Draw inspiration from many sources, not just one - Ask yourself "how would I feel if I were in the other person's shoes" - Recognize that people make genuine mistakes. Be kind.
