The demon creature Nian is a Chinese legend. Every first day of the year, the monster would awaken, then eats the grain and livestock, and scare children!

So, to “guo Nian”, the villagers started to fight back. They posted red papers with calligraphy of lucky wishes on gates and walls to ward off the evil spirit.

They soon become a cultural identity that brings luck to the home.

After that, Lunar New Year became a major celebration where everybody relaxes from work, and family becomes the most important. Families would band together to prepare food such as dumplings that resemble money bags, bringing prosperity.

The season is also a most important time to bring families from afar together for a feast. Members of the family will reunite in a full circle because it symbolises a complete and fulfilling gathering.

During “lao sheng”, everyone will gather round and lift the colorful salad as high as possible and scream lucky messages loudly.

The youngsters love receiving red packets as a sign of good luck. They also reward long life to the elders who give them!

But, most importantly, everyone anticipates a prosperous new beginning together as a family. As one, we tuan yuan (团圆) and guo nian!
