Yesterday, my children and I found a baby bird in the dirt at the horseback riding arena. We made a nest out of grass hay, lovingly donated by the horses eating their dinners and decorated with dandelions by my daughter. This was placed in a small bucket, borrowed from my horse trainer friend, to secure our precious cargo. She, also, had rescued a Starling who when released decide to stay near her home. We made the trip to my parents' and brothers' home, a virtual aviary in its own right, to babysit Birdie and the kids while I went to the pet store for supplies. I returned home with the supplies I planned for and an extra bit of baby bird formula the nice girl at the store suggested - home we went with supplies in tow. Birdie has now been with us for just over 24 hours and she is thriving! My daughter likes to gently handle her, which did make me very nervous for Birdie's stress level. Well my fears were unfounded and Birdie loves to be with my daughter. She is happy and quiet sitting on my daughter's shoulder, enjoying the company? :) Definitely the warmth, and it must have been comforting to the baby bird.
