The Chancellor said a failure in negotiations could unwind most of the progress made in restoring the national finances after the credit crunch. The comments came as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) unveiled its latest assessment of the health of UK plc. The head of the body, Christine Lagarde, said it was 'fairly obvious' that failure to reach agreement would be highly damaging for the UK and 'less so' the EU. The IMF estimated that if there is a deal the UK economy will grow by 1.5 per cent next year and the year after. But the report said the figure could be 'significantly worse' if Britain crashes out of the bloc - raising the prospect of a recession.
