A candidate for the Lee's Summit School Board is running a unique campaign -- she's focusing on autism.

Sherri Tucker said the current board does a "wonderful job" on most issues, but not the one's she's most concerned about, which is children with autism.

Tucker, who has an autistic son, said she wants better education for children with special needs.

"I am a single-issue candidate because this issue isn't being addressed. And no one on the board understands it," Tucker told KMBC's Micheal Mahoney.

"We have many parents who have children with special needs in our district, and those parents think we do a good job with those kids," School Board member Jack Wiley said.

Wiley said the Lee's Summit School District spends about $15 million a year on its special education program, which has about 1,900 students enrolled in it. The district's entire budget is about $200 million and the district has a total enrollment of about 17,000.

Wiley is one of three incumbents on the ballot. The Lee's Summit School Board election is April 8.
