As the 2018 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year Michael Soskil Sr. explains, he believes that compassion and empathy should be at the heart of education. He tells the story of a life-affirming trip to Nairobi, in which he delivered water filters that his students had worked to provide. During an emotional Skype call, his students were able to meet the students they helped—an experience that would reinforce his belief that teachers should focus not merely on content in their work, but cultivating lifelong compassion in their students.
