When it comes to using modal scales in the most common musical styles, Lydian mode might not be as popular as perhaps Dorian or Mixolydian. But, when dealing with non-functioning “Major 7th” and altered “Major 7th” chords (applying the “#11” or the “b5”), Lydian scale is one of our most important scales. 

When studying the Lydian mode it is important to keep in mind that (more often than not), these “Major 7” chord situations (using either altered or non-functioning “Major Seventh”), will be found in styles limited to; Jazz, Pop-Jazz, certain Soul R&B pieces, most definitely Jazz Fusion, as well as, some Latin Jazz music. 

Keep in mind that even though performing solos using the Lydian mode will be a rather rare occurrence, when and if it does so happen, you’ll need to have some skills developed for using Lydian. Being able to cover the application of any situation involving Lydian Mode is an important skill that every lead guitarist needs to learn.
