The Bodhi Tree is said to be the location of Siddartha's moment of clarity and transcendance allowing him to reach enlightenment. Enlightenment is not easily obtained and requires tremendous focus and effort. As I view art as a religious practice, seeking to encounter true clarity of thought through intense focus and concentration, I created this piece as a means of honoring Laura Aguilar, a Chicana photographer from East Los Angeles who often photographed her nude body in nature. She passed away at the age of 54 due to diabetes, a health concern for many latinx American people, especially onese with a body like mine or Laura's. The blossoming lotus flower is a symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism and carries that history for most. The flower is also a symbol in my own community, as are the butterflies floating around my body, together they symbolize the enlightenment that I hope to achieve, which I believe to be found in the incredible work of Ms. Aguilar.
