DAYTON -- Medical officials are warning parents about the dangers shopping carts pose to your children.A study revealed 66 children a day are treated in U.S. emergency rooms for shopping cart-related injuries.Despite a shopping cart safety standard implemented in 2004, a new study shows the number of shopping cart related injuries is actually climbing. Over 24,000 every year; that's one child every 22 minutes treated in an emergency room.We actually do see about 1 to 2 every month, so it's something that's pretty common. We see lots and lots of falls.  The shopping carts many times are the culprit, Dayton Children's Hospital Jessica Saunders explained Tuesday. When a child falls the child's head is larger in proportion to the rest of their body so many times they are having head injuries.Falls from  shopping carts account for the 70% of injuries. Experts say another common mistake is placing the car seat on top of the shopping cart., but experts say that's possibly even bigger no-no.I remember hearing the story about a baby falling out and hitting the pavement with that so that definitely stuck with me so I don't do that, Centerville Mom of two Abby Ghanta shared.Reduce the risk of injury for your child is simple. Choose a cart with working straps, strap your child in securely, and make sure they remain seated.Researchers are calling for design changes: better restraint systems and placing the child seating area near the floor.
