(30 Oct 2018) PITTSBURGH _ Dr. Jerry Rabinowitz was celebrated Monday at the first funeral for the 11 people gunned down over the weekend at a Pittsburgh synagogue. Mourners lined up down the street and around the corner outside the Jewish Community Center in the city's famed Squirrel Hill neighborhood. Several police cars kept watch over the scene as people in black Hassidic outfits, shawls, yarmulkes and white medical coats filed in. The 66-year-old physician was among those gunned down Saturday during services at Tree of Life synagogue. Numerous media outlets have reported that he went back in to help the wounded, and that was how he died. Among the mourners was Robin Faulker, a surgical nurse and a patient of Rabinowitz's for 30 years. She dabbed at her eyes with a handkerchief as she talked about what a caring man the doctor was. Rabinowitz had a family medicine practice and was affiliated with UPMC Shadyside hospital. He was a go-to doctor for HIV patients in the epidemic's early and desperate days.
