Each year, students in the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences work in teams on a senior design project that is brought to them by a customer from an outside business or organization, or from a department within the University. They are given a real-world problem and they must use all of the knowledge they have accumulated in their previous three years to come up with a solution.

The students normally work in groups within each of the engineering majors: biomedical, chemical, computer science, electrical and computer, mechanical and optical. The complexity of the projects however, often requires a solution that involves a much more broad approach that reaches across multiple areas and disciplines. The goal of the project is to not only give students the opportunity to solve a real-world problem, but to collaborate with people who have knowledge in other fields, much as they will in a career beyond their engineering program. Once the projects are complete, students bring their ideas to a public audience, filling Robert B. Goergen Hall for Biomedical Engineering and Optics with a huge variety of innovative designs and products in what has become known as Hajim Design Day.

While the projects may simply be a beneficial experience for many students, some of the designs have been successful enough to be used by the companies they are designed for, or even result in business opportunity for students once they graduate.
