(8 Oct 2018) Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said on Monday that the election result in Brazil was another example of the surge on support for populist parties around the world. Far-right congressman Jair Bolsonaro got 46 percent of the vote on Sunday in Brazil, short of the 50-plus percent he needed. Polls predicted Bolsonaro would come out in front on Sunday, but he far outperformed expectations, blazing past competitors with more financing, institutional backing of parties and free air time on television.
