Giant fantastical creatures parade through Mexico City

(20 Oct 2018) Thousands of people lined the streets of Mexico City on Saturday for the annual "Alebrijes" parade, where artisans showcase colorful sculptures of surreal creatures traditionally made of wood or paper. Celebrating its 12th edition, the parade showed the work of Mexican artisans from across the country who spend weeks, sometimes months, creating their alebrijes. The Oaxacan fantasy sculptures were conceived by Mexican artist Pedro Linares in the 1930's, after he got ill and had dreams of fantastical creatures, many of them mixtures of known animals, which shouted the word 'Alebrije, Alebrije' at him. When recovered, he began recreating the creatures from his dream into sculptures resembling them.
