Imagine if you couldn’t watch the videos you love. I recorded this video because of EU Law Article 13. This is new legislation going through European Parliament at the moment that could have a significant effect on YouTube creators like myself, and could even see the closing of channels like mine. The intention of the article is to do more to stop the spread of copyrighted material on the internet. This isn't law yet, it still has to go through more steps before becoming a European directive and passed as law by member states. So how does it effect YouTube. At the moment the video creator is responsible for copyright infringement. YouTube provides a "Music Policies" search facility, where creators can check out the status of millions of tunes. Also, when a video is uploaded, YouTube has an engine that checks your video against their database to see if your video is in infringing copyright. Now this system is not 100% accurate, and is limited by available technology. What Article 13 does is to put the responsibility for copyright infringement on to Web Site. In this case YouTube. However, as I have already said, the technology isn't there yet to ensure there is no copyright infringement. So the net effect could be that the slightest doubt would result in videos being blocked by YouTube. This could result in a huge increase in the number of videos being blocked by YouTube, including our existing videos, and therefore stop them from being available to view. This may also result in channels being taken down. So if you want to keep videos and channels like OldGuitarMonkey going, please checkout the links below and maybe sign the petition.
