Understanding Others
Young America Films / Centron for McGraw-Hill - Discussion Problems in Group Living series
INT high school classroom - popular guy Bob & his clique think he has Editorship of school paper in the bag & that poor, quiet Ben from 'wrong side of the tracks' has no chance. Bob pretends to be magnanimous but we hear his snobbish inner thoughts - thinks Ben's shabby clothes are "weird", his father "worked just long enough to buy a bottle", his mum who cleaned for them was a "lousy worker", & his family just "stupid, ignorant people". Bob tells his sycophantic, weird-looking friends "you think he'd feel out of place around people like us"! Stern-looking teacher Miss Alton arrives at Press Club meeting - Bob looks around and thinks smugly the job is his but teacher announces that Ben will be Editor - CU Bob looking horrified & cue more mean-spirited thoughts. Narration starts while Ben addresses meeting - admonishes Bob for his judgmental attitude.
22:12:27 Above scene repeated from Ben's viewpoint - wonders if popular clique are laughing at him, decides not to go over to them - another kid tells him he thinks Ben will get the Editorship - teacher makes announcement & Ben can't believe he got it - makes acceptance speech "I'm open to suggestions". VO suggests Ben may not give the popular clique "enough basis for understanding".
22:15:34 Scene repeated again from teacher's point of view - thinks "they're not going to like Ben Curtis as their new Editor" but justifies her choice to herself based on his ability - "he's a courageous boy" - wishes he would let other kids get to know him as she knows him - wonders "are they too set against you because you're different?" VO "There are many people like Ben, people with problems, people we reject and ignore because we don't understand why they act as they do, and because they're different from our idea of friends" - shots of soft-spoken & shy kids being pushed around - pretty girl looks at "ugly" girl w/ pity [she looks the same but with glasses!] - "those who are physically attractive cannot always appreciate the loneliness of those who are not". VO asks what Ben, Bob & teacher could do to improve situation - "What do you think?"
[NB Main actors look about ten years older than they should be! Filmed in Lawrence, Kansas.]
