As Canada’s weak dollar and the California drought conspire to send food prices spiralling upwards, Ottawa’s neediest residents are among those hardest hit. And the situation is expected to worsen as we head deeper into winter. At the Ottawa Food Bank, problems faced by rising prices are exacerbated by expected increases in demand and a possible reduction in donations. “We currently buy $1.2 million worth of food every year,” says executive director Michael Maidment, “and so if the prices are impacted locally, then our money won’t go as far.
