The victory at Chi Bi left both Sun Jian and Cao Cao's forces weakened, however, this also meant it was the perfect time to invade and gain territory. A risky situation would require an even riskier strategy to succeed. As such Xiahou Dun lead the charge into Sun Jian's territory as Zhao Yun and others guarded the main camp. Xiahou Dun would rush to loop around behind Sun Jian's main force and route them from behind, dealing a crippling blow to his officers. The strategy narrowly succeeded. Perhaps sensing opportunity, Yuan Shao attacked next seeking to take the territory Cao Cao stole. Attacking at such a critical juncture put Cao Cao on the edge, but Taishi Ci managed to force the invaders out.
