Dr. Götz-Werner is the founder and CEO of one of the biggest drug-store chains in Germany. When he was youth, he could hardly image to have such a career and success. In times of minimum wage or cutting wages to stay competitive, he chose an alternative path for his company, especially regarding his employees. As an enthusiast of Goethe’s ‘Faust’, Dr. Götz-Werner adapted a simple quote as his life motivation and as his approach towards other people: “Hier bin ich Mensch”. For him, this rule means to respect people as individuals and provide them with the basis for a sustainable lifestyle. This mindset is one of the reasons, he promotes an unconditional basic income.


Als Gründer der Drogeriemarktkette „dm“ versucht Götz Werner einen alternativen Weg für sein Unternehmen einzuschlagen. Trotz des hohen Wettbewerbsdruck auf den Märkten ist sein Ziel eindeutig: Er möchte ein wirtschaftliches Umfeld schaffen, in dem seine Kunden und Mitarbeiter als Mensch gesehen und respektiert werden. Als Gothe-Enthusiast adaptierte Dr. Werner das Zitat aus Faust „Hier bin ich Mensch“ als Slogan, aber auch als Leitfaden für sein Unternehmen. Für ihn bedeutet dies, den Menschen als Individuum zu akzeptieren und dafür zu sorgen, dass die nötigen Bedingungen erfüllt sind, um Menschsein möglich zu machen. Dementsprechend ist er auch ein Verfechter des bedingungslosen Grundeinkommens.
 Prof. Götz W. Werner is founder and member of the supervisory board of dm. Before he joined the supervisory board, Prof. Werner ran the company for 35 years. In addition, he led the Cross-faculty institute for Entrepreneurship at Karlsruhe Institut für Technologie (KIT).

Werner is president of the EHI Retail Institute (EHI) and founder of the “Unternimm die Zukunft” initiative, which advocates for an unconditional basic income. He uses his public standing as one of Germany’s most successful entrepreneurs to voice concerns about social inequality and to advocate for social innovation and a more equitable society.
