This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Imagine bringing the academia out of the classes and into the town square, that’s exactly what Ayelet and Yael did!

Dr. Ayelet Shavit is a senior lecturer at Tel Hai College, a former Fulbright scholar and Marie Currie (OIF) fellow, who raises three young boys and a dog a mile away from the Lebanese border.
Dr. Shavit’s research is in the discipline of philosophy of science, focused on the multifaceted meanings of ‘location’ and ‘altruism’ in biological fieldwork, and her main community project is Academy in Town Square. Dr. Shavit’s many articles were published in leading journals such as Philosophy of Science and Bioscience, her book One for All? won the Bloomfield prize and her current book – Stepping in the Same River Twice – co-authored with Aaron Ellison – will appear with The Yale University Press and supported by the ISF (Israel Science Foundation).

Yael Silver is a graduate student in the department of Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the winner of the honorary mention for outstanding social involvement at Tel Hai College.
Ms. Silver grew up in the city of Ranana yet chose to become a resident of Kiryat Shemona and the Upper Galilee region, the most peripheral area in the country according to the European Union standards. While completing her bachelor degree at Tel Hai College in a special program for honor students she became deeply involved in the social justice movement of 2011, led several successful and sustainable social initiatives and became the director of Academy in Town Square.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
