(7 Dec 2018) France will deploy nearly 90,000 police officers and gendarmes on Saturday as more riots are expected to take place in Paris and elsewhere in the country, the interior minister said.
The number of security officers has been bumped up from 65,000 that were mobilised last weekend when more than 130 people were injured and over 400 were arrested in the worst street violence seen in Paris in decades.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday, Christophe Castaner also made comments on the arrests that were made the day before in Mantes-la-Jolie.
That's after images of the arrest of high school students protesting an education reform propmted public outcry over perceived police brutality.
The images, shared widely on social media, showed a group of students on their knees with their hands behind their head. They were being watched over by armed police officers whose faces are hidden by ski masks.
Castaner said that 151 people were arrested in the small town, adding that some of them carried weapons. He said none of the students were injured.
