馃嚠馃嚬CINQUE TERRE: VERNAZZA, CORNIGLIA, MONTEROSSO, MANAROLA, RIOMAGGIORE - PORTOFINO - SANTA MARGHERITA LIGURE 馃嚠馃嚬 

We travelled to the Italian Riviera for 4 nights between May 26th - 30th 2018. On our first full day in Italy, we decided to visit the 5 UNESCO world heritage villages collectively called 'Cinque Terre' or 5Terre. We bought a Cinque Terre day pass which entitled us to hop on and off the train going between these villages all throughout the day and it cost us around 15.60 Euros. 
Vernazza is beautiful; the colours make for perfect photo opportunities. There were quite a few people already there when we arrived however, it didn't feel crowded, lots of space to wonder around and get a feel for the village. The best panoramic views are from the top of the castle; you enter by walking back up the village past the square and then you will see a sign with some steps leading up towards the castle. By around 11.30am it started to get very crowded, a huge difference to an hour or so beforehand. 
Next, we took the Cinque Terre train to Monterosso and wanted to find a restaurant to chill out and have some food and drinks, we managed to find a restaurant facing the seafront and stayed there for an hour or so. Pesto is famous in this region of Italy and I happen to love it so I chose a pesto pasta dish which was lovely.  Monterosso was very busy; the train from Vernazza to Monterosso was packed!!  We were standing up jammed together all the way it was literally only a few minutes so not too bad. 
We then decided to go to Corniglia which is perched up high on the cliffs and the only village not to have a harbour/water entrance. We arrived In Corniglia and we had a choice of walking up a few hundred steps to the village or, we could catch a free shuttle bus...it was so hot, we were sweaty...we chose the bus. The bus stop can be seen if you turn left from the station.  Corniglia is beautiful, is a lot smaller than the other villages and felt a lot quieter too.  We found a gorgeous cocktail bar and stayed there for a few hours.  
We arrived at Manarola early evening, and wandered around the village until we found the harbour and a path leading up to Nessun Dorma. The walk around the cliffs edge is beautiful, with amazing views looking over at the stacked colourful houses clinging to the cliffs of Manarola. We then went on a search for another restaurant for an evening meal.
A few nights later, we stopped off at Riomaggiore; we only had 35 minutes before our train back to La Spezia so we raced around trying to take in as much as possible.  It is so different to the other villages, we loved it and it had quite a cool vibe to it with lots of people sitting in bars on the streets and groups of younger people chilling out laughing.

We caught a train from La Spezia to Santa Margherita Ligure in the morning, the train took around an hour and there were lots of seats available. Santa Margherita is truly beautiful, the buildings are fascinating with painted panels on their walls, very grand looking. Plenty of bars and restaurants and lovely beaches too. We went out in the evening quite late and it seemed quiet but the square near the harbour had many bars and restaurants open with people sitting outside so we joined them; a lovely relaxed little town, we loved it here.
Just before lunch the following day, we caught a bus from outside our hotel - Best Western Regina Elena which cost us 3 euros for a single and took around 8-10 minutes to arrive at Portofino. When we arrived, it didn't seem that busy which was lovely to wander around and take photos without crowds of people in your way however, after we had lunch around 1pm, Portofino soon started to get busier. We walked up to Castello Brown; it took us around 10-15 minutes, steep in parts but a really lovely walk up.  Entry into the castle costs 5 euros and the views are absolutely stunning! We loved Portofino, such a pretty part of the Italian Riviera. Leaving early evening, we took a boat back to Santa Margherita which costs us 7 euros and took around 20 minutes....well worth doing as the views leaving Portofino are stunning.
