When Prospera, the Duchess of Milan, is usurped by her brother and cast adrift with her daughter on stormy seas, she survives stranded on an island with only one other inhabitant -- the beast Caliban. Having enslaved Caliban, Prospera claims the island as her own, and remains watchful. A full 12 years later, King Alonso of Naples sails by, and Prospera sees an opportunity. She causes a great storm to wash the King and his men ashore on her island, and so the game of wits begins. Can Prospera seize her chance for revenge, and what will be the consequences for all those close to her? Director Julie Taymor's bold adaptation adds resonance to Shakespeare's tale of magic and vengeance by making the lead role a wronged woman, and will amaze anyone expecting a dry recitation of verse with its energy, verve and emotional pyrotechnics.
