Ah, the moon. Wait. That’s no moon … that’s a hard water stain. No. That’s too big to be a water stain. I have a very bad feeling about this.

Hard water isn’t just a problem for glass shower doors. On film, as it dries, hard water can leave stains that show up as white artifacts on the image. As with dust, which we discussed some weeks ago, the print or digital image shows a white mark because the hard water stain minerals leave black marks.

Sometimes these aren’t hard water, either. Sometimes this is caused by fixer being incompletely washed off prior to drying. The chemical residue from incomplete rinsing will have basically the same effect as hard water.

There are some ways to prevent this:
- Mix all your chemistry stock with distilled or filtered water.
- Properly and fully wash your negatives.
- Use photo flow; I use a mild dish detergent.
- Rinse the film with distilled or filtered water prior to drying.
Those basic quality control measures can do a lot to prevent film re-washing or digital image hard water and chemical residue stain removal.
