(13 Dec 2018) Brazilian environment policy leaders and experts believed the country will not leave the Paris Agreement, despite pledges made by recently elected and soon-to-be President Jair Bolsonaro. The far-right candidate who won the national elections in October is expected to be sworn in January next year. World leaders and climate experts are guessing on what Brazil's position in the Paris agreement will be moving forward. Bolsonaro previously stated that he is an admirer of President Donald Trump's policies. On Wednesday, the President-elect said during a live streaming on social media that he believed the Paris Agreement should be changed to better suit his country's needs, threatening again to leave the global climate agreement signed in Paris in 2015. Recently, Brazil also withdrew its offer to host the next conference on climate change next year, leading environmental groups to question the government's commitment to reducing carbon emissions. Brazil pulled its offer to host the 2019 climate change conference stating fiscal and budget constraint. Environmental groups interpreted the decision as a nod to Bolsonaro, who promised during his campaign to pull Brazil out of the Paris accord on climate change. Since being elected, Bolsonaro has publicly wavered on those promises. Climate scientists said Bolsonaro's intention to open the Amazon for greater development would make it impossible for Latin America's largest nation to meet its reduced emissions targets in the coming years.
