Short-Term Rentals Meeting Preview

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The issue of whether it should be legal for local homeowners to rent out their place for less than 30 days at a time has become a hot button issue for thousands citywide. On Wednesday, a community meeting will be held to allow residents to weigh in, perhaps one final time. Asheville Councilman Marc Hunt says the city is hoping to make a decision on the issue within the next two months. "We want to make sure everyone is heard and this is the opportunity for the public to come," Hunt said. "I can tell you that this is a very difficult decision for council to make." Residents who want short term rentals to be made legal say that they serve as an important source of income for many area families, and also say it's an affordable housing that could help to draw tourists to the area. Some opponents of the move say they want short term rentals to be inspected and regulated, which would likely mean homeowners would pay taxes to the city - like hotels and motels who contend that playing field isn't level with short term rentals in the game. Other opponents say that rentals on the block could decrease property values and don't foster the sense of community that many neighborhoods value. The public meeting will be held at the U.S. Cellular Center at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
