‘Farce’ is a miniature piece for piano written in 2017, intended for a cycle of 3-4 works. It features a blend of 20-century techniques and jazz, all tied together with a sense of classical balance and occasional counterpoint. Laid out in sonata form, it begins with an introduction, a ternary main theme, and a bipartite secondary group with no coda. The fact that the exposition modulates to the subdominant a blues influence. The development restates the introduction before digressing into a sequentiation of the opening motif. After an interlude based on the inversion of the main theme, the section culminates in a series of strident Petrushka chords before the recapitulation. The main theme, which was open-ended, is further explored in the coda, rounding it off in a frenetic climax. Ironically, this piece, with its sharp-edged nature, was written along other pieces in a purely Romantic aesthetic.
