The Farmer's Curst Wife was an old English folk song which that great collector Cecil Sharp felt sure had a whistling refrain, but he was unable to track it down in England. However on visiting Knott County in the USA he was delighted to hear this version of the same story including a whistling refrain. The song along with this information I discovered in a book called Folk Songs of the Southern Appalachians as sung by Jean Ritchie. I am not sure where I first heard it, it is possible that I even worked it out for myself, though it would have been with some difficulty if I did, as I do not read music. Still it is an amusing song with an unusual format and I like it.
