British PM Theresa May insists Brexit deal remains achievable

British prime minister Theresa May insisted on Wednesday that she was committed to reaching an agreement with the EU on Brexit. Immediately before heading to Brussels for a make-or-break summit with other 27 EU member leaders, May told a rowdy parliament that she was determined to achieve a deal, including agreement on the contentious issue of a hard border in Northern Ireland. But opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn said that May and her party colleagues were too busy fighting among themselves to be able to put Britain's interests first. Meanwhile, demonstrators gathered outside the EU summit in Brussels on Wednesday, demanding that Brexit should be stopped. They called on the British government to hold a second referendum on the issue, so people could have their say on any final deal. EU leaders will meet Wednesday evening to try to finalize an agreement, although expectations of a breakthrough are low.
