A week of updates from the off grid homestead. A lot has been going on behind the scenes in the past week.

It has mostly rained for days and days now so work on the property is going slower. Also with me working off site sometimes it slows down the projects even more.

We are burning fire wood to heat the off grid tiny house these days. It is in the 30s and 50s now so we need heat going. We use the windows to regulate temperature inside the tiny house. Otherwise it gets too hot inside.

From my work I got an old Craftsman radial arm saw which I currently have in the garage. I worked for this directly after thinking that it may be useful in the wood shop. I have some ideas for projects using this saw already which will be on video soon. The saw is quite old but works fine. I lubed up all the moving parts and made sure everything works and moves smoothly. The saw cuts up to 16 inch wide boards which is a bonus on the homestead.

We are harvesting apples from our own homestead. This is such a blessing because I am allergic to the pesticides in commercially grown apples. Having a source of pure, organic apples is so nice. We are sorting out the ones that need to be processed right away from the ones that can wait a while.

One of the projects I have planned is a food dehydrator that will work over the wood stove. I plan to use this to dehydrate apples for later snacks.

We keep our garden covered at night to extend the growing season of our vegetables. We still have green beans, peppers and tomatoes growing. Well the tomatoes are dying but they are next to the peppers so they are covered anyway.

We also have kale, cabbage family of plants and some lettuce growing. We have to harvest our potatoes and the rest of our corn.

At night we cover the plants and during the day we uncover them. This is a daily thing now.

I got a new chainsaw chain on the lumber mill. I used it to cut the pine rounds that you saw in a video recently. Other than that I have not yet used the lumber mill because it is raining non stop these days. I hope to get a roof over the top of it using some boards and a tarp.

Melanie helped me get the wood storage area tarped closed for now. I have to put up furring strips to hold the tarp in place.

I got a deal on tarps a while back. I got 10 ft x 22 ft long tarps in a bundle of eight for only $30 total. These are very useful on the homestead.

One of these tarps completely enclosed the wood storage area which is perfect.

Inside our off grid tiny home Melanie is cooking our dinner and dessert. We have been eating mostly garden vegetables and less meat. We are studying a healthier form of living and eating these days.

Our meal this day had all vegetables that we either grew ourselves or bartered and traded for with our neighbors.

Our dessert was apple crisp pie which is all natural and completely homemade. The apples are from our own tree. And it was so good!!

I got new wheels for the garden cart which was disabled the past year. We got a $79 cart on sale for $49 at TSC about two years ago but the wheels did not last a year. They rotted and fell apart. The tires would no longer hold air either so we were running it on flats the past year.

This was not comfortable to use at all. But it was all we had. New tires alone without rims would have cost us $12 each and that would total the price of the cart. We could not see paying that much to repair the cart.

But today we found $32-40 dollar tires on clearance for only $5 each! These are Marathon brand flat free tires. They are guaranteed not to leak or go flat ever. They are foam filled. Now our cart has a new life.

Thats it from the homestead today. We have a lot of projects going on but it is raining every day so this limits us.
