Western nations have often developed novel technologies in an attempt to gain an advantage in conflict.  However, Simon Deakin tells us that humans learn to adapt in the face of a superior threat and that novel technology is more widely available worldwide: the West's edge is diminishing.  There are exciting technologies in development which promise much to our military.  But to realise the potential benefits we must learn genuinely to innovate and adapt, requiring a change in culture and attitude as much as technology.

Simon is Director Force Development at the Army Headquarters and has served in the Army for over 33 years. Currently responsible for constructing the future capability development plan, Simon has to speculate on technology, geo-political and societal trends up to 30 years ahead of it's time to ensure the Army stays ahead. He has held a variety of operational, Ministry of Defence and international posts.
