Iowa is divided into seven main landform regions. Each landform has a unique geologic history that that shapes the way it looks. The Southern Iowa Drift Plain landform region is approximately the southern third of Iowa. The gentle rolling landscape was shaped by erosion and well developed drainage networks, and is lightly covered by wind-blown silt called loess.
