Trees are cool. They add curb appeal and provide a great spot for a picnic. Did you know that strategically planting trees can also help lower your energy bills and make your home more comfortable?

Leafy trees on the south, east and west sides of your home can provide shade from the hot summer sun, keeping your home cooler. When the weather cools and the leaves fall off, they let the sun through to help keep your home warmer.

Winter can also bring cold winds. Evergreen trees on the northwest side of your home block harsh winter winds.

Before you dig that hole, consider where the tree can add the most value. Also, don't forget to call 811 to make sure there are no underground utilities.

Cooler summers, warmer winters, lower energy bills and pretty trees—that's a win, win, win, win situation.
