I'm sure we can all agree getting children to focus on a task can be challenging. It's been said kids are more prone to be distracted if the said task is a difficult one. I beg to differ though.

There isn't a task more formidable than executing a battle style routine on turntables. Especially when you have no prior DJ experience or turntables at home to practice on. I mean, do you understand the degree of concentration it takes to engage 3 of your 5 senses, sight (tracking your record's marks) hearing (securing your rhythm) and touch (manipulating the vinyl with precision timing and accuracy)... in a group setting at that? Let's just say I've seen adults struggle for weeks learning how to do what Donovan, Denahj and Logan mastered as a team in just 2 hours worth of instruction.

Teaching kids the art of DJing has taught me the best way to get a youngin' to center himself/herself is to establish clear goals. I let these 3 munchkins know from day one they were practicing to make their families and friends proud of their work on the final day of camp aka #PAA performance day (8/11). I think personalizing DJing in such way made them take all I have to teach them seriously. Positive reinforcement is also HUGE. Every now and then it's important to remind them of how good they're doing. It just makes them want to do even better the next time and the time after that. All of that aside though, fun is probably the best facilitator of focus, and nothing is more fun than expressing yourself creatively. Fun and creativity are to aspects of self expression kids don't need an adult or master DJ to teach them, for it's natural to them.
