UNICEF official on urgency of Yemen peace talks

(5 Dec 2018) A senior UNICEF official on Wednesday expressed the hope that peace talks between the warring sides in Yemen would bring an end to the "brutal war on children". Geert Cappelaere said seven million children in the conflict-torn country went to bed hungry every day, with 400-thousand suffering from severe acute malnutrition. Cappelaere, UNICEF's regional director for the Middle East and North Africa, was speaking after visiting a hospital in the southern Yemeni city of Aden, where he met children and their parents. "It is only when you talk to the children themselves that you truly understand how hard hitting the war and the crisis is on each and every child," he said. The warring parties will meet in Sweden this week for another attempt at talks aimed at halting the three-year-old war. UN officials say they don't expect rapid progress toward a political settlement, but hope for at least minor steps that would help to address the country's worsening humanitarian crisis.
