The Mahalaxmi temple in Ratlam in Madhya Pradhesh receives offerings worth crores throughout the year in the form of gold and silver ornaments. During Diwali every year, the same gold and silver is distributed to the devotees in the form of prashad.
Apparently, people travel thousands of miles to pay a visit to the temple and receive this prashad. Sometimes, the traveling cost for these devotees exceeds the cost of the gold or silver they receive in the form of prashad. However, the offerings made are not treated as jewelry and instead considered to be blessings of the Goddess. The ornaments received in this form are usually never sold off and instead kept safely in the locker.
