The New and Improved Stick Tech Spotlight: Crescent City Colors

Months ago I enlisted the aid of my talented and eager freelance team of head dyers Dan Tisinger (also known as DarkStar Lacrosse) and Kevin Henry (alias: Gopherlax5) to dye a series of heads as gifts for the Inside Lacrosse Staff. I gave DarkStar (Dan) and Gopherlax (Kevin) direction on the theme of each head, but complete freedom to dye it however they like. I then enlisted the aid of a professional stringer (or myself if one was not available, I sort of get paid to string sticks, right? Right) to finish the project. This is the next head in our series and it is a Maverik Centrik U for Geoff Shannon, Inside Lacrosse Features Editor and all around fan of New Orleans from his time at Tulane University. We also got Zach DePalmer (from Barefoot Lacrosse) to string the head. Dan took the lead on this one, as the only real direction I gave him was to make sure there were “Lots of Fleur De Lis on the head” and some details about Geoff’s love for all things NOLA. The result, as you can see, is far more spectacular than my mundane suggestions. The three-color fade is hard enough to achieve, but look closely at the overlap that the cross-hatching and Fleur de lis patterns achieve. Green over yellow is not an easy thing to pull off, but it is masterfully achieved throughout the head and particularly the throat where the detail is sharp. The colors are emblematic of New Orleans’ most famous celebration: Mardi Gras. The highlight of the dye, for me, is the lettering on the scoop. “Laissez les bons temps rouler.” Is a Cajun expression meaning, “Let the Good Times Roll”. It is used as a rallying cry, an expression of joy and an anthem of sorts. It’s the perfect phrase to compliment the design and feel of this head. Zach strung Geoff’s head up with a piece of Epoch Otter Mesh and formed a really casual mid pocket. This was by design, as Geoff doesn’t need anything fancy for a pocket — he would want something that gets the job done with a modicum of style; not an overflowing of excess. The top is tight and the shooters are loose to allow for a great “boat” pocket that is NCAA legal with two straight shooters. Stay tuned for more entries in the IL Staff Stick Tech Series this fall.
