Cde Jack Shapiro, veteran member of the original CPGB of the 1920s is now a member of the CPGB-ML and honorary president of Hands off China. Long a friend of China, Jack's brother, Michael lived and worked much of his adult life in China. Michael Shapiro worked as a war Correspondent for Xinhua news agency during the Korean war. So effective was Michael Shapiro's education of British prisoners of war, helping them to understand that their real interests lay with the very Korean and Chinese people that their 'own' imperialism sent them to fight, that his passport was revoked. Had he returned he would have faced Treason charges and the death penalty. As Paul Robeson noted, when faced with similar accusations: Patriotism - love of ones country and devotion to its peoples interests - cannot be equated with the outlook of some Wall Street corporation lawyer who is appointed secretary of state, or with some political office-seeker who is rewarded with the job of issuing passports. Michael and Jack are true British Working Class Heroes!
