(24 Oct 2018) Brazil's Workers' Party's presidential candidate Fernando Haddad on Tuesday visited Rio de Janeiro to meet with residents, five days ahead of the country's elections. Haddad met with relatives of victims killed by crime in the area, including the mother of a 14-year-old shot dead on his way to school by a stray bullet, during a police operation. The mother, Bruna da Silva, told a crowd that had gathered to cheer on Haddad they did not want Social Liberal Party's presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro in power. She added that if he was to win "you can get the black bags ready," referring to the innocent lives that would be lost. While Brazilians say that deteriorating security is one of their main concerns, Bolsonaro has proposed to crack down on the crime but with proposals that have attracted the most attention and criticism - to give police more freedom to shoot first and give ordinary people more access to guns. Critics have expressed concern that police violence, already a major contributor to the high homicide rate, will only worsen if police are given carte blanche. Haddad spoke at a news conference during his visit, where he said that a "wave of conservatism" in the West could be reversed through political forces "reorganising themselves to present a project of development and social inclusion." He also added he was worried about the chances of an arms escalation in the region if his opponent wins. Bolsonaro, a far-right former army captain, won the first round of voting on 7 October and opinion polls put him ahead of the leftist Haddad, in the October 28 ballot.
