You have to follow rituals because it allows you to evolve with the time. Every religion has three aspects. However, there are two external dimensions as well. These are the narrative aspect and the second one is ritualistic practices such as religious ceremonials, rituals, daily worship, meditation, pilgrimage, prayer and festivals. All of these are covered by ritualistic aspect. Discipline is the third important reason for following any rituals. We use symbols to relate to anything that is very abstract which is another factor why rituals are very crucial.
