Sex workers hold fashion show in Rio to raise awareness about conditions

(19 Nov 2018) Sex workers, former sex workers and transgender people performed at the Daspu fashion show in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday. Daspu, a wordplay on the expression "das putas," which means "the hookers" in Portuguese, is a fashion house founded and run by Rio's sex workers. The idea of the event, which is part of marking the Women of the World festival, is to show who the sex workers are and to raise awareness about their treatment. Daspu is owned by a Brazilian NGO that works towards better health, safety and legal conditions for sex workers. Elizabeth Guedes, 35, who works as a cleaner during the day and a sex worker at night, said the event has a "liberating meaning" and highlights sex workers' fight to protect themselves.
