Nawaz Sharif returned from London to Pakistan and was arrested, the country is in a turmoil, bomb explosions are staple news, amid all of this, Pakistan is hurtling down towards its date with democracy. Elections are Pakistan are scheduled for July 25. What kind of ruling dispensation will Pakistan have, and how does it impact/affect India? On the panel: 1. Vipin Pubby Senior Journalist 2. Are we seeing the bravado of a man who has nothing left to lose? Was Nawaz Sharif sending smoke signals to international community for intervention and it failed to act? Is it martial law without being declared martial law? What will be the role of the United States? The US is not happy about Pak’s closeness to China. Sharif was too close to Saudi monarchy. There is a looming threat that the US can target drone strikes at Pakistan proper, not just tribal badlands. One view is that Sharif was not cooperating and had to be removed. Military is being seen as working with the judiciary to undermine Sharif and promoting Imran Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf Party. Almost all Pakistanis perceive India as an existential threat. How will India deal with a hardliner like Imran Khan? There is a power struggle within the party as Shahbaz Sharif, the younger brother of Mr. Nawaz Sharif, is running the PML-N's electoral campaign. While the Sharifs have framed it as a battle for civilian supremacy and democratic values, concrete political and economic questions in Pakistan have often been overshadowed by charisma and slogans. Irony is writ large as Sharif began as a Zia protégé in 1980, amassed fortune, was propped up to undermine Benazir in 1980s and 90s, and is now a victim of a similar army move.
